How to Pick Apples

How to Pick:

• Roll the apple upwards off the branch and give it a slight twist.

• Do not pull straight away from the tree — if the apple doesn’t come off easily, it’s not ready to be picked.

• If two apples are joined together at the stem, both will come away at the same time — be ready to catch the second one!

• If an apple drops while you’re picking (or others are on the ground from the tree drop), go ahead and pick it up.

Once Picked:

• Place apples gently into the bag or container to prevent bruising.

• Keep apples cool to increase shelf life — the fruit/vegetable drawer of the refrigerator works well.

• Fresh-picked apples stored in cool conditions generally keep for weeks, but shelf life varies by variety.

• Do not store apples with potatoes — potatoes release ethylene gas as they age, which speeds apple spoilage.

• Don’t wash apples until just before use to prevent premature spoilage.
